OCT — Optical Coherence Tomography — is an advanced eye scan for people of all ages. Similar to ultrasound, OCT uses light rather than sound waves to image the different layers that make up the structures at the front and back of your eye.
The OCT machine captures both a photograph and a cross-sectional scan of the eye at the same time — all in under 20 minutes.
Using our Topcon state-of-the-art 3D OCT camera, your optometrist will take both a digital photograph and a three-dimensional cross-sectional scan of the back of your eye. The scan is non-invasive, painless, simple and quick.

Everything you need to know
Not at all. The OCT scan is completely painless and non-invasive. No eye drops are required, and nothing touches your eye. You simply look into the machine for a few seconds while it takes the image.
The scan itself takes less than 5 minutes per eye. Your entire appointment including the consultation and results discussion is usually around 20–30 minutes.

We recommend annual OCT scans for most adults, and more frequent monitoring if you have been identified as at risk for conditions such as glaucoma or macular degeneration. Your optometrist will advise on your individual needs.
Yes, OCT is suitable for people of all ages. It is a particularly useful tool for monitoring eye health in children who may not yet be able to communicate vision problems clearly.
In most cases, pupil dilation is not required for an OCT scan. However, in some circumstances your optometrist may recommend it for a more detailed view. They will always discuss this with you first.
